40% of the food produced in the U.S. ends up in landfills. While, According to Feeding America , there are more than 48 million people in the U.S. that are considered food insecure. There are countless circumstances that are causing perfectly good food to end up in the garbage, but 412 Food Rescue is working to put some of that food on people's dinner tables.
412 Food Rescue is a non-profit that coordinates volunteers who transport food from groceries, distributors, and restaurants in Allegheny County to communities in need. There are 650 volunteers in their current network that helped move more than 700,000 pounds In the last 7 months alone. Pittsburgh Pirates Charities recently donated a refrigerated truck to the non-profit that will allow them to move an even higher volume of food.
For two days I rode along with Scott Marshall from 412 Food Rescue in the new truck, and learned how they're working to feed Allegheny County.
